2007-2008 Officer Biographies and RIT AAUP Vision Statements
President: Tom Policano [Phone:
(585) 475-6891, Email: tpolicano@ritaaup.org]
biography: Associate Professor in the NTID Arts & Imaging Studies
department. With a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MFA, I have
worked at RIT since 1976. I have been an AAUP member for most of the
last 25 years. As of January 1st, 2007 I am the Executive Director
of the NYS Conference
of AAUP. I have a sustained interest in using
media to improve communications leading to my participation over the
years on committees such as those researching the RIT web space and
campus group-ware solutions including the evaluation of our current
Desire2Learn. I was a member of the RIT On-Line Committee for six years
and chaired it for two. Current committees include: Agenda for Action
II Committee, RIT Teaching Learning Center Advisory Board, Faculty
Advisor for the RIT Empty Sky Go Club, NFC NTID At-Large Representative,
Vice-Chair of the RIT Academic Senate, ITS New and Emerging Technologies
Group.
vision: Information is power. Information overload is chaos. It is
my experience that the shared governance system at RIT is a top down
administrative centric system. The shear number of committees, policies,
issues, and strategic goals that a faculty member would have to be
in touch with to be informed and active in the direction of this Institute
would preclude our doing our contracted academic jobs. RIT AAUP has
re-emerged to enable a virtual town meeting for faculty to give all
980 full time faculty and the 321 adjunct faculty a collective, simultaneous
voice to allow communication, dialogue, and issue resolution. By organizing
the concerns of faculty and initiating an informed and formal response,
I believe RIT AAUP can present a faculty wide perspective and recommendation
to the appropriate governance group and follow through until a resolution
is reached.
Vice President: Jean-Guy Naud [Phone:
(585) 475-6309, Email: jennvc@rit.edu]
biography: Last June, I completed thirty seven years of service
on the faculty of RIT. During my tenure, I served and chaired numerous
college and institute committees and special task forces. I was also
the chair of an academic department at NTID for twenty one years. This
fall, I returned to a full-time faculty role.
My formal education was in photography and graphic arts, so I was
on the ground floor of the digital imaging revolution that merged these
two disciplines. I have applied my skills outside the university by
consulting with industry and government agencies in addition to teaching
seminars for industry.
I was promoted to professor in 1984 and have been a member of the
AAUP for more that thirty five years.
vision: RIT is about to reach another milestone: selecting a new President
and a new Provost. Having served under several presidents starting
with Mark Ellingson, I feel that I can bring a broad faculty perspective,
based on the experience I gained by serving on the previous RIT AAUP
chapter, Faculty Council, Academic Senate, Grievance Committee, and
various “Budget Committees” to name a few. I see the RIT
AAUP chapter playing a key role in the governance of the university
and in planning for the expected change in leadership. This can be
accomplished by following the principles that have guided the AAUP
over the years.
Secretary: Vince Serravallo [Phone:
(585) 475-2433, Email: vssgsp@rit.edu]
biography: PhD Sociology (CUNY Graduate Center); tenured assistant
professor of sociology; began in 1998; initiated the revival of the
Chapter; from Kingston, NY; currently researching how colleges and
universities respond to organizing efforts of faculty; hobbies:
running, archery, crosswords.
vision: I see our chapter as the primary agent on Campus that will
create a culture of joint effort regarding the governance of RIT.
Once our officials are elected and we join the New York State
Conference, I envision our Chapter involved with a membership drive.
